課程概述

課程大綱
This course will focus on the electronic structure of materials. Many properties of materials are directly connected to the behavior of electrons in the system, which is described by quantum physics. In recent years, electronic structure calculations have become important tools to understand characteristic properties of various important materials. Advances have been made in basic theory, new algorithms and computational methods, making it possible to connect fundamental equations with specific predictions for real materials and phenomena. This course is designed to provide a unified description of the modern approaches in understanding electronic structure of matter, with emphasis on real-world applications in advanced novel materials. It will include the discussion of density functional theory – the approach most widely used today, and other approaches to describe the dynamical properties, excited states, and many-body effects. Examples to tackle the many-body problem with computational methods include the quantum Monte Carlo as well as Green’s function approaches. The course can be taken by students with a broad range of backgrounds, who wants to learn the state-of-the-art developments in electronic structure methods in condensed matter, which is one of the great challenges in theoretical materials physics.

 

課程目標
The objective of this course is to introduce to the students the intellectual challenges in addressing electronic properties in condensed matter and the connection with topics in materials physics. 
課程要求
The students are expected to have basic knowledge of solid state physics as described in Chapters 4, 5, and 8 of Aschroft & Mermin, and some familiarity with electronic bands and calculations as described in Chapters 9 and 10 of Aschroft & Mermin. In addition, working knowledge of quantum mechanics is essential.
